How to check a Level 3 personal training course
By CourseClarity · Updated
A personal-training package needs to fit your starting point as well as your career goal. Check the award, entry requirements and assessment route before comparing headline prices.
Check the qualification and CIMSPA claim separately
Record the exact award and awarding organisation. If the course claims regulated status, verify that record separately from professional endorsement. For a CIMSPA claim, use its endorsed-training directory to check the particular product and professional standard, not just the provider name.

Find out whether the price assumes prior training
Ask whether you can enrol, take the assessments and obtain the award with your existing qualifications. Those are not necessarily the same test. A package suitable for an existing gym instructor may require a beginner to buy an earlier module. Request the beginner’s full route and total price, not just confirmation that enrolment is open.
Separate online learning from practical assessment
Ask how practical competence is assessed: live observation, submitted video, in-person assessment or another method. Confirm whether you must arrange a client, gym access or travel and whether there are booking deadlines. If a location is essential, get it confirmed before committing to an “online” course.
Treat career and earnings claims as questions
Ask what a job guarantee requires, which roles count and what happens if its conditions are met but no job follows. For earnings figures, check whether they describe employed salary, self-employed turnover or take-home income. Neither an advert nor a professional endorsement establishes the salary uplift caused by taking this specific course.
Fictional worked example — not a provider review
What changes the buying decision?
The advert: “Become a personal trainer for £699 — no experience needed.”
The detail: The fictional assessment rules require a prior instructor award not included in the £699 package.
Why it matters: A beginner’s route costs more and takes longer than the headline suggests. Ask for the prerequisite price, duration and assessment sequence before comparing alternatives.
Ask before you pay
- Which exact award and CIMSPA-endorsed learning product are included?
- Can I complete the assessments with my current qualifications?
- Who arranges practical assessment, clients and venue access, and at what cost?
