How to check an electrical training course

By CourseClarity · Updated

Work backwards from the role or card you need. A package can contain genuine electrical awards without completing the occupational route implied by its headline.

Match the package to the intended occupational route

For the Installation Electrician gold card, ECS lists a recognised apprenticeship or competency-based qualification, a current health, safety and environmental assessment, and a recognised wiring-regulations qualification. Its requirements show why a theory award or regulations course alone should not be treated as the full route. Use the requirements for your intended card and jurisdiction rather than generalising from another card.

Find the workplace-evidence requirement

Ask whether practical training at a centre is enough or whether you must demonstrate competence on suitable work sites. Who finds that work? “Placement support” can mean advice, introductions or a confirmed placement; request the specific commitment and what happens if you cannot secure suitable work.

Price the entire route, not the first stage

Separate classroom tuition, workplace assessment, portfolio review and final assessments. Ask whether assessor travel, repeated visits and reassessment are included. If the package is described as NVQ preparation, establish whether enrolment and assessment for the NVQ are separate purchases.

Check the route against your experience

A route for an experienced worker is not automatically suitable for a beginner. Send your existing qualifications and experience to the organisation responsible for the route and ask what remains. Do not infer eligibility from a sales consultation alone. Course completion and a successful card application are separate outcomes.

Fictional worked example — not a provider review

What changes the buying decision?

The advert: “Fast-track electrical career package.”

The detail: The fictional offer includes technical training but leaves workplace competence assessment and suitable employment to the learner.

Why it matters: The training may be useful, but the buyer still needs a viable workplace route, additional time and potentially further fees before reaching the intended outcome.

Ask before you pay

  1. Which exact awards and occupational requirements does the package complete?
  2. Must I already have suitable work, and who arranges workplace assessment?
  3. Which assessment, travel and application costs remain outside the advertised price?
