How to check an IT certification course
By CourseClarity · Updated
Buying exam preparation is not the same as buying certification. Check the exam code, voucher conditions and completion timetable as carefully as the course syllabus.
Match the exam code, not just the familiar name
Ask which vendor exam and version the materials prepare you for. Compare them with the vendor’s current exam objectives and retirement information. Microsoft publishes an exam-retirement schedule and explains that a retired exam can no longer be taken. A long learning-access period does not extend an exam’s availability.
Check exactly what “exam included” buys
Ask whether the package includes an actual voucher, reimbursement after passing, or only mock tests. Confirm when a voucher is issued, its expiry, territory restrictions and whether you must complete practice tests before receiving it. Read the vendor’s and reseller’s terms for the voucher you are actually buying; do not assume one vendor’s policy applies to another.
Keep three deadlines on your calendar
Record the learning-access end date, voucher expiry and exam retirement date. Your useful study window may end at the earliest relevant deadline. Ask what happens if materials are replaced, an exam retires or a resit cannot be booked before expiry. A promise of a free retake is only useful when its conditions can be met.
Look beyond a job-guarantee headline
Check whether the offer promises a job, an interview, placement support or a refund subject to conditions. Ask about required applications, location, salary thresholds and deadlines. Compare training with the actual skills and experience requested in roles you would apply for; a vendor credential alone does not prove a course causes an earnings increase.
Fictional worked example — not a provider review
What changes the buying decision?
The advert: “Twelve months of access, including your certification exam.”
The detail: In this fictional offer the voucher expires after six months and the named exam retires after four months.
Why it matters: The practical exam deadline is four months away, not twelve. Ask for a current exam route or a written replacement arrangement before paying.
Ask before you pay
- Which exam code and version are included, and when do they retire?
- When will I receive the voucher, and what conditions and expiry apply?
- Does the retake promise cover another vendor exam attempt or only more tuition?
